Young Frank Ruhstaller arrives in Sacramento from Einsiedeln, Switzerland via Buffalo, NY Kentucky, and Panama. He quickly rose to foreman of the City Brewery at 12th and I Streets.

Capt Frank Ruhstaller purchases City Brewery and begins brewing Ruhstaller’s Gilt Edge Lager (a steam beer… 15 years before Anchor Brewing was founded).

During Capt Frank’s era Sacramento became the Largest Hop Growing Region in the world… even shipping hops back to the Old World.

Sacramento was also home to the Largest Brewery West of the Mississippi… Buffalo Brewery… a cooperative of several Sacramento breweries with Capt Frank Ruhstaller as the Managing Member.

1898 Capt Frank Ruhstaller builds the Ruhstaller Building at 9th and J Streets to house his offices, entertain customers, and serve the community it’s favorite brews in a Basement Taproom.
